Living Deep in a Shallow World

“Poverty, we know about. It’s poor people we do not know; but it’s knowing poor people that enables substantive change and authentic empowerment to take place.” This quote is taken from “Submerge. Living Deep in a Shallow World: Service, Justice and Compassion Among the World’s Poor” by John Hayes, Director of Innerchange, an order within our organisation, CRM. This recent book is a powerful testimony of  John and Innerchange’s journey with the poor. (more…)

We Just Do What We Do

In a poll recently run by Church Marketing Sucks which asked “How does your church work to effectively minister to multiple demographics”, the biggest response was 28% of churches who stated “We just do what we do. God will translate it across cultural lines.”

Great, if that is the way it works, why don’t we go to inner-Mongolia and speak English to non-English speaking people! This survey response is a classic example of why the church needs to think like missionaries and so often doesn’t. And then in the same breath, these churches will be decrying the standards of young generations.

Today is the the official start of spring. Georgia has been blossoming for some time now. This image is of spring blossom from atop of the civil war Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park. A nice time out with the children but an eerie feeling when walking in places of such bloodshed and sacrifice.

Cross Country Trip

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Hello dear friends and family,

The last several weeks have been a whirlwind.  We are settled for about two more weeks in Georgia with my mom until we make the final trail out west. Late Feb and early March was really interesting!  I had to go to Florida to visit my Grandfather right before we left for our big adventure.  I also got to see my old college roommate, Jamie. From there, we continued on, leaving my dad’s place and driving to Cleaveland, OH where my mom’s family resides.  We had so much fun - this is the Polish side of my family and so we made “Babka” together…well I can’t take credit Andrew and the kids had a blast with my Aunt Teresa making this yummy Polish style coffee cake. Here is another picture with my Grandma.  Place your mouse over the pictures to see captions. (more…)

Tyranny of Competence

Technically competent managers/leaders often become hindrances to the process of deep change. This observation has rung true as I read “Building the Bridge as You Walk On It - A Guide for Leading Change” by Robert Quinn. This deep and searching book is not a simple book to enact but it discusses change leadership in a manner that few others come close to. (more…)

While in Cleveland I had the opportunity to attend the Cleveland Auto Show with Jen’s uncle David. Aside from lots of tired feet it reminded me of a recent blog post by Sam Metcalf, president of CRM, the organisation we have joined. See here for some of that post and more pictures of the beautiful cars, specifically the Chevy Camaro (above) and Audi R8 . . . (more…)

On the road again . . .

We have left New England and are as of today in Ohio visiting Jen’s grandmother and family. With a 12 hour drive and two small children the trip was interesting to say the least! It was also during the storm system that was up and down the East Coast which resulted in the tragic deaths from the tornadoes down south. Thankfully our trip was a safe one.

We leave for Atlanta on Tuesday. Above is an image of the pilot (Andrew) being snapped by the co-pilot (Jennifer)!
