Living Deep in a Shallow World

“Poverty, we know about. It’s poor people we do not know; but it’s knowing poor people that enables substantive change and authentic empowerment to take place.” This quote is taken from “Submerge. Living Deep in a Shallow World: Service, Justice and Compassion Among the World’s Poor” by John Hayes, Director of Innerchange, an order within our organisation, CRM. This recent book is a powerful testimony of  John and Innerchange’s journey with the poor.Made up of both inspiring, heart-wrenching stories of sacrifice and hope and practical ministry considerations, Submerge sheds new light on a world rarely if ever seen by most in the West. This book is not just for those called to this ministry - it serves as a compelling testimony for both the church and society so that we may not negate our collective responsibility to care for the disadvantaged. From a missional perspective, it also offers valuable real world applications of sound mission perspectives and theology that can be applied to cultures and people beyond the poor in this book.

Personally it reminds me afresh of the privileged opportunity Jen and I have to be a part of this organization and to serve those like John Hayes and his teams.  With the awareness generated in books like this, I know I am responsible to live my life in a way that is not all about me and mine.
